Alumni Spotlight: Alex Wimmer (GHS Class of 2003)
We are incredibly proud to celebrate Gretna alumnus and former Gretna Band Director Alex Wimmer, who has been named the Director of Bands at Kansas State University.
A 2003 graduate of Gretna High School, Alex went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2007. That same year, he returned home to Gretna, where he served as Gretna High School’s Band Director from 2007–2012. During his time in Gretna, Alex made a lasting impact on the band program and inspired countless students through his passion for music and education.
Alex continued his academic journey at Kansas State University, earning both his master’s degree and PhD. Following the completion of his doctorate, he joined the Kansas State band staff as Assistant Band Director. As of this week, Alex was officially named Head Director of Bands, succeeding the legendary Frank Tracz and taking the helm of one of the nation’s most respected collegiate band programs.
Alex’s journey—from Gretna student, to Gretna educator, to national leader in music education—is a powerful example of the impact our alumni continue to make. Congratulations, Dr. Wimmer! We are proud to call you a Gretna graduate and grateful for the legacy you continue to build.
